It's amazing how many metal products we will find around the outside of our properties, many of which require maintenance to stop corrosion and rust.
A lot of homes built in the 60s and before will have the old galvanised water pipes. They maintain their appearance on the outside, while rusting away on the inside of the pipe.
Brackets, bolts, hold down bolts attached to concrete and timber stumps, steel plates attached to bearers. I often come across these products covered in rust and no attempts have ever been made to apply metal primer or some cold galvanising paint to reverse the decay of the metal.
Metal columns, metal step stringers and some post supports often rust out just below ground level out of visual site. The only sign that something is happening below ground level is when the surrounding concrete cracks from the pressure caused when the metal expands because of the rust. Gutters are another metal product, which if not maintained well, will need to be replaced long before the recommended use by date. When using any of the new steel products request a product called super gal, this will be galvanised inside and out, prime all welds and cuts.
