More than 20 years ago I became involved in constructing steel kit homes. They were not new then but the company I was involved with had a great marketing plan. And Nusteel Kit Homes were sold by the thousands.
I still believe that steel fabricated homes are going to be an item of the future. A down side of using steel frames is the amount of labour required in having to screw or bolt , weld or rivet to join walls and roof members. Hold down and bracing requirement for steel frames will be designed by an engineer and will not be as involved as a timber frame. . Metal will always be straight and a constant thickness
and will be lighter to work with. Steel will not be subject to termites or dry rot but will be vulnerable to corrosion and rust. You will need to paint and seal cut ends and areas in contact with moisture. Then you shouldn’t have a problem.
LSB lite steel beams by Smorgons steel have been introduced as an alternative for the timber joists and bearers.
when working around or cutting any steel product protect your eyes and ears
