That post hole shovel is a terrific piece of leverage when in the right hands

You can reach and lever at the same time.

With all timber handled tools they have a limit on what leverage can be obtained

internal handails

Internal stairs, when they are there, you take for granted. Not having to go outside on these cold wet nights is a bonus.

To introduce a set of stairs you need a bit of room and an easy way to work it out.

For a tread you will need to allow 250 mm and for every riser the norm is 176mm. To work out how many risers you will need, measure from the ground floor to the under side of the floor above and allow 20mm for the thickness of the floor board. Divide this measurement by 176 and this give you the number of risers.

A head height of 1.9 meters is the minimum you require but this measurement is from the underside of the floor joist or the ground floor ceiling. Spiral stairs take up the least amount of room but are hopeless for moving furniture. Before making a decision to install spiral stairs try a set out. A good way to save space is with the use of winders. Winders are used in corners and you can loose 3 treads in the space of a landing. These staircases are tight but you will be able to move furniture and they are easer to ascend and descend because they don’t go wide to narrow on every tread
